Reverse Scan Technique (RST) is a fully digital method for precise verification and refinement of implant positions using a laboratory scanner. It was developed by MUDr. Pavel Hyšpler, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Dentistry at the Military University Hospital Prague. This technique eliminates errors associated with merging data from intraoral scanners (merging error) by also scanning the entire model of the planned prosthetic restoration at once on a laboratory scanner using implant scan analogs, thus replacing traditional impression procedures.
Read the RST workflow published in the prestigious journal JPD (The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry) under the title Reverse scan technique: A verification method for the implant position in intraoral scans.

BioniQ scan analogs
BioniQ scan analogs are primarily designed for use in the reverse scan technique. This technique eliminates errors in merging intraoral scans (merging error) and enables the creation of an accurate virtual model of extensive restorations without the need for plaster models.
BioniQ scan analogs are available for both prosthetic platforms of the BioniQ system – the blue QR prosthetic platform and the yellow QN prosthetic platform – as well as for Screw-On abutments for screw-retained restorations. BioniQ scan analogs are manufactured from Grade 4 titanium.

In addition to the reverse scan technique itself, BioniQ scan analogs offer several other practical applications.
- Easier copying of emergence profiles
- Accurate scanning of solid indexes
- Easier and more accurate digitalization of temporary restorations
This versatility makes them an attractive tool for dentists and dental technicians who want to make the most of digital workflow.
Accuracy for extensive restorations
Implant scan analogs and Screw-On abutment scan analogs with specially designed scannable geometry are fixed into the provisional restoration / wax-up and make it possible to obtain a laboratory scan that accurately reproduces the spatial orientation and position of the implants within a fully digital workflow for extensive implant-supported fixed restorations.
- Maximum accuracy of implant position even in extensive restorations
- Fully digital workflow – no physical models required
- Time savings in both the clinic and the laboratory
- Compatibility with commonly used CAD/CAM systems
Digital libraries
BioniQ digital libraries for BioniQ scan analogs are available for exocad and 3Shape CAD/CAM systems.
