Hydrophilic BIO-surface

  • Faster formation of a functional bone-implant contact
  • Reduced time required for the early healing phase
  • Immediate loading

Histology – hydrophilic BIO-surface of dental implants

The unique alkali-treated bioactive surface of the implant accelerates the process of bone-implant contact formation, providing the implant with increasing secondary stability at the earliest stages of healing. This phenomenon helps to reduce the healing time and enables early and immediate loading to become a predictable and safe treatment protocol.

Hydrophilic BIO-surface

The LASAK company was the first company that launched a bioactive, hydrophilic, nano-structured surface treatment for dental implants, a so-called BIO-surface , on the European market. The experimental and, in particular the clinical, widely documented results have confirmed that dental implants with the BIO-surface considerably speed up and improve the quality of the osseointegration process and optimize the implant´s stability in the early healing phase, which improves predictability and performance of the treatment and provides new advanced clinical procedures while reducing treatment times to a great extent. Currently, this surface treatment is used on a global basis and marketed in more than twenty countries in the world, e.g. in Germany and Sweden, being a great practical representation of Czech science abroad.

What makes BIO-surface unique?

Bioactivity has been defined as the characteristics of an implant material that allows it to form a bond with living tissues. It was discovered in the late nineteen sixties in a group of materials called bioactive glasses, which are able to create bonds with bones within several days. Machined-smooth titanium can be regarded as a bio-inert material that becomes encapsulated by soft tissues and forms a direct contact with bone (osseointegration) only under certain conditions and after a long time. Since the discovery of osseointegration, the history of dental implantology has been closely linked with efforts to modify the surface of titanium with a view to bringing the titanium surface reactivity closer to bioactive materials and thus enabling titanium to form a functional interface between dental implants and bone safely and in the shortest time. The LASAK company has developed a unique, three-dimensional surface treatment combining mechanical and chemical surface treatment methods to achieve a unique macro-, micro- and nano-structured bioactive titanium surface – the BIO-surface. The BIO-surface stimulates the attachment of osteogenic cells, differentiation and bone matrix synthesis, which leads to an improved bone-implant contact in a shorter time.

The surface treatment used in the preparation of the BIO-surface considerably increases the density of hydroxyl groups on the surface of implants and improves the BIO-surface hydration by an order of magnitude compared to that of other commercially available surfaces. The chemical modification of the BIO-surface at the nano-scale makes the surface hydrophilic (low contact angle) and enables its active ion interaction with the blood plasma long before the first osteogenic cells attach the surface. The excellent wetting properties of the BIO-surface enable the fast penetration of blood into its complex structure.
